Vintage Toby Jug Ceramic Creamers

Europe, late 19th – early 20th century (c. 1891–1921)

Collectible ceramic creamers in the Toby Jug tradition, modelled as juggling figures. The expressive faces, refined modelling and lively form reflect European satirical ceramics popular in Britain and continental Europe at the turn of the century.

The creamers are made of glazed ceramic with hand-painted decoration. The bases bear the mark “FOREIGN” and an anchor symbol. The FOREIGN mark was used on imported goods between 1891 and 1921, following the British Merchandise Marks Act. From 1921 onward, the exact country of origin was required.

The anchor mark is not typical of Japanese export ceramics and is more commonly associated with European workshops, symbolising maritime trade and export. Compared to later mass-produced Toby Jug pieces, these creamers stand out for their finer craftsmanship and more nuanced detailing.

An additional point of value is that this is a matched original pair, preserved together over time — complete pairs are considerably rarer than single surviving examples.
